Sparx EA Core Skills

This online training course is intended as a basic introduction to Enterprise Architect (EA) from Sparx Systems. The aim of the course is to familiarise students with the layout and functions of Sparx EA and to enable them to create a basic model structure and diagrams using the tool.

The course features almost 90 minutes (87 to be precise) of online instruction delivered through 5 lessons intended to equip a Sparx EA newbie to master the basic skills needed to work with this powerful tool.

If you are familiar with UML and have worked with other modeling tools then this will be all you need to get started to work with Sparx EA.

It will enable you to create diagrams in an appropriate project structure and use the basic feature but do note that this course does not cover the full set of features the tool provides and you may wish to consider other courses we have online.

Read on to learn more about the outcomes and scope for the lessons in this course.

Key Outcomes

Ideal for someone new to Enterprise Architect as an introduction to the tool and how to perform basic tasks and make use of the views the tool provides to make the most of the content in the model repository.

Module 1 - Introduction

The first module for this course provides an overview of Enterprise Architect, some of the key features for Business Analysts as well as useful skills to manage the workspace and windows of information.

It provides useful information and orientation to enable users to manage the workspace and become familiar with the presentation of the rich information the repository can provide.

Features and workspaces

This first lesson provides a quick introduction to Enterprise Architect that helps to understand the key features for Business Analysts and introduces the layout of the screen and key terms that will be used throughout this course.

Menus toolbars and windows

The second lesson of this module helps new users to learn more about the workspace. Users are introduced to the menus and toolbars within Enterprise Architect and the introduction provides a useful overview of the overall set of functions the tool provides.

Useful skills to configure the workspace and manage the many windows that are available that present different aspects of information for model elements are also addressed providing a valuable approach to working with all of the information available in the project repository.

Module 2 - Core Skills

This second module introduces the project repository and how to create and manage project files. The main focus is to provide an overview of the many different ways to add structural and non-structural content to the project repository.

This module is an imperative to learning and understanding how to work with Enterprise Architect. It teaches the necessary skills to create and manage project repositories which then allow the specification of system requirements at all levels through the use of the different Model Elements available within Enterprise Architect.

This module is intended to provide a generic skill set that can be applied to creating any of the various Model Elements and Diagrams the tool provides as well as the appropriate structure for the project repository.

Structural Elements

This lesson has two main parts. The first provides an understanding of how to create and manage Enterprise Architect repositories. These files provide the ability to capture and store all of the specifications for a project or system within the file.

The second part focuses on creating the structure of the repository so that the diagrams and elements (also the specifications) are structured in a logical way for intuitive navigation.

The structure is also important in providing the ability to generate the required documentation form the repository.

Model Elements

The second lesson of the Core Skills module focuses on the key skills required to create and work with diagrams in Enterprise Architect. The lesson does not focus on a specific diagram type, rather it provides the generic skills to work with almost all diagram types within Enterprise Architect.

These skills will enable Business Analysts to confidently work within the Enterprise Architect workspace to create and manage the various requirements 'elements' they create be they software requirements, business rules, use cases, system entities or screens for a system.

Diagram Tips and Tricks

This lesson builds on the previous lessons in the Core Skills module by providing some useful tips and tricks to help in the creation of clear, easy to read, diagrams.

It demonstrates how to configure the diagram to show / hide a grid as well as apply a 'snap to grid' function to support more accurate placement of model elements.

It covers functionality in Enterprise Architect to work with multiple elements to re size, align and tidy up what could be cluttered diagram.

Also included are steps to add diagram notes and a legend (where different colours are used for elements).
